Bowling last over vs KKR reminded me of Ben Stokes in 2016 World T20 final: Moeen Ali

first_imgThree years ago an English bowler suffered at the hands of a West Indian batsman at the Eden Gardens in the World T20 final in Kolkata. It was Ben Stokes against Carlos Brathwaite back then with the Windies needing 19 off the last over to clinch their maiden World T20 title and the England all-rounder had the responsibility of bowling the final over.Stokes completely lost the plot, bowling four full-length deliveries and got hammered for four successive sixes by Brathwaite as the Windies won by 4 wickets, chasing down 156 with 2 balls to spare. Stokes’ reputation as a T20 bowler and his confidence in general, took a big hit after that game. He was subjected to endless memes and jokes on social media as a result.Three years later it was once again an Englishman bowling to a West Indian at the Eden Gardens in a crunch game but this time the result was completely different.Royal Challengers Bangalore all-rounder Moeen Ali had to defend 24 runs in the final over against Kolkata Knight Riders with the big-hitting Andre Russell and in-form Nitish Rana at the crease. Russell was batting on 59 off 22 balls while Rana was on strike on 78 off 43 for the first ball of the 20th over from Moeen. He took a single and gave the strike to Russell. The second ball was deposited over long-on for a six by Russell but the next two deliveries belonged to Moeen as he bowled a dot ball and followed it up with a length delivery on which Russell got run out for 65.advertisementMoeen conceded 13 runs in the over in total but the contest was over as soon as Russell missed the third ball and then got out as KKR fell 10 runs short of the 214-run target against [email protected] #VIVOIPL (@IPL) April 19, 2019The Royal Challengers had posted 213 for for 4 in 20 overs with captain Virat Kohli scoring 100 off 58 balls while Moeen Ali smashed 66 off 28 balls. After the match, when RCB pacer Dale Steyn asked Moeen Ali what was going through his head in the final over. The England off-spinner admitted he was thinking of the punishment that his teammate Stokes recieved at the hands of Brathwaite three years ago.”It did yeah (when Steyn asked him if the final over reminded him of someone in particular). 2016 World T20 final, Ben Stokes… that is exactly what I was thinking. I’ve given him a lot of stick for that and it did cross my mind. I thought I better get this one right otherwise he is going to give it back to me,” Moeen told Steyn in a candid chat on [email protected] and Moeen take us through the nervy win, the paceman’s 9 year @RCBTweets wait and memories of the iconic Eden Gardens.P.S What’s your views on Moeen’s last over, @benstokes38 ?By @28anand. #KKRvRCBWatch the full video – (@IPL) April 20, 2019Moeen then asked Steyn about his comeback to Royal Challengers Bangalore after nine years and what it was like to bowl for the franchise once again in the IPL on Friday night.”It would have been nice if it was an easier game. Bit of a tight one but it’s always good to be back (at RCB) playing against some of the best in the world in some of the most difficult conditions.”Very excited to get back to Bengaluru and with the second win (of IPL 2019) hopefully a bit of momentum for the rest of the tournament,” Steyn said.”We need you to play every game because since you’ve come over we have started winning,” Moeen joked.Dale Steyn was signed up by RCB a few days ago and on Friday, he replaced Umesh Yadav in the playing XI.Steyn had last played for RCB in the IPL on April 24, 2010 against Deccan Chargers. He had taken 1 for 11 off 3 overs and RCB had won. 9 years ago, Steyn had played 15 matches for the Royal Challengers and picked 15 wickets with a best of 3 for 18.In 2011, Dale Steyn moved to Deccan Chargers before playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, he played 1 game for Gujarat Lions but did not feature in the next two editions of the Indian Premier League.Despite Friday night’s win, Royal Challengers Bangalore still need to win all their matches from hereon if they harbour any hopes of making it to the playoffs. Also Read | RCB got 20 runs too many because of Virat Kohli: Dinesh Karthik after KKR defeatAlso Read | IPL 2019: Kuldeep Yadav breaks down after Moeen Ali onslaught at Eden GardensAlso Read | Promised AB de Villiers I will score a hundred: Virat Kohli after fireworks vs KKRAlso Read | IPL 2019: Virat Kohli hits 5th Indian Premier League hundred, 1st since 2016advertisementlast_img
