Former Women’s Soccer Standout Schmitz Named to MVC 25-Year Anniversary Team

first_imgST. LOUIS – Former Drake University women’s soccer standout Andrea Schmitz has been selected to the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer 25-Year Anniversary Team, the MVC office announced Thursday, Oct. 19 morning. The 2017-18 season is a landmark one for the MVC and for women’s sports. To help celebrate the 45th anniversary of Title IX and the 25th anniversary of women’s sports, the Valley is naming 25-Year Anniversary Teams throughout 2017-18 for each of the league’s sponsored women’s sports. Schmitz is the most decorated player in program history, beginning her career the same year women’s soccer started at Drake. A four-year starter from 2002-05, she was a four-time All-MVC selection, the 2002 MVC Freshman of the Year and the 2005 MVC Player of the Year. Schmitz graduated as the school record holder in assists (28), goals (32), points (92) and shots (250). Her goals record stood until this season when Rebecca Rodgers broke the mark and currently Rodgers and Schmitz are tied in career points. Schmitz helped Drake win 45 games in her outstanding career. Team composition for each sport has been determined by a 25-person committee (two representatives from each MVC institution and a panel of five voters from the conference office).  The team composition includes years in which league teams competed under the MVC umbrella during the past 25 years (1992-2017) and does not include competition from the current season. The voting panel determined a ‘Top 10’ from a list of 25 finalists. To view the entire team click here. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
