New independent power plant for SA

first_img18 July 2013 South African mining group Exxaro Resources and French independent power producer GDF Suez have signed an agreement to develop a 600-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant outside Lephalale in Limpopo province. The proposed site is 17 kilometres northwest of Lephalale in the Waterberg region and adjacent to Exxaro’s Grootegeluk mine. Fuel for the plant will be supplied by Exxaro’s prospective opencast greenfields Thabametsi mine on a surface conveyor belt. “The mine will supply up to 3.8-million tonnes per annum of run-of-mine coal to the power plant post ramp-up,” Exxaro said in a statement on Monday. It is expected that coal will be supplied to the plant for up to 25 years, as coal will continue to form a large part of South Africa’s energy mix. “South Africa urgently requires the installation of additional electricity generation capacity in the near future due to the combination of a low reserve margin and growing electricity demand,” Exxaro said. “GDF Suez and Exxaro are global leaders in their respective industries and are pleased to be able to combine their strengths to positively impact the baseload power generation capacity, with the aim of assisting in alleviating South Africa’s power supply challenges.” The plant’s capacity can be expanded to 1 200MW, depending on water availability and grid integration constraints. “GDF Suez’s partnership with South Africa is gaining momentum, with several agreements successfully concluded during the second quarter of 2013,” said GDF Suez Energy CEO for South Asia, Middle East and Africa Shankar Krishnamoorthy. “Successful public-private partnerships in the power sector will contribute to the adequacy and efficiency of South Africa’s electricity industry, which is key to the country’s economic development.” As a key play in the country’s coal mining sector, Exxaro is integrated in the power and energy production value chain, according to CEO, Sipho Nkosi. “We have taken advantage of the opportunities provided from current regulatory development in South Africa’s mineral and energy sectors to develop a coal mine that can supply new power generating capacity,” Nkosi said. AVG 9 Launches With Smarter and Faster LinkScanner, Free ID Protection Service

first_imgTags:#news#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… frederic lardinois Related Posts The latest outbreaks of Twitter and Facebook worms have once again shown that while antivirus and malware protection often focuses on dealing with threats once they have already landed on a user’s computer, proactive protection is really the way to go on the net. The paid and free versions AVG 9, which launched today, include an enhanced link scanner that can handle shortened URLs and analyze a site in real time. Other new security features include improved rootkit protection, which is also included in the free version, and ‘cloud protection,’ which will block phishing sites. The AVG firewall has also gotten an update and now makes most of the obvious decisions for the user. In earlier versions, AVG’s firewall would often ask users questions that had pretty obvious answers and, similar to Vista’s User Account Control, users would simply get complacent and just click the warning away. Thanks to its ‘behavioral technology,’ the software can also figure out if a certain program is acting suspiciously, even if the file isn’t infected with a known virus. AVG’s CEO J.R. Smith told us last week the the company focused on a number of key issues in this new version: keeping pop-ups down, improving the scanning speed and keeping memory usage to a minimum so that the app would also run well on netbooks. In our own tests, AVG 9 was faster than the previous version, though we can’t quite corroborate AVG’s claim that the new version scans 50% faster.Identity Theft ProtectionAnother interesting new service AVG launched today is its Identity Theft Recovery Unity. A free 800-number for users of the paid and free versions will provide information about identity theft and guide users through the process of restoring their credit scores if they become a victim of identity theft. Mac Versions? We also asked AVG if the company planned to release any products for the Mac. While the company doesn’t have anything to announce right now, it was interesting to hear that AVG has been talking to Apple about phishing protection on the iPhone – a feature that would only work if Apple gave AVG access to some of the deeper layers of the iPhone OS.Microsoft, of course, also released its own anti-virus software, Microsoft Security Essentials, a few days ago, though while it’s a very capable antivirus package, Security Essentials is still a rather basic product compared to solutions from AVG, Avira, or Symantec.center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Nick Saban Upset With Media, Claims He Wasn’t Making An Excuse For Alabama’s Sugar Bowl Loss

first_imgnick saban press conference sec media daysWednesday morning, Alabama head coach Nick Saban raised a few eyebrows at SEC Media Days when he mentioned that NFL Draft grades, which are delivered on December 15, might have caused some of his players to play “not to get hurt” during his team’s Sugar Bowl loss to Ohio State. The comments were perceived by many, including ESPN’s Danny Kanell, as an excuse for his team’s loss. Saban doesn’t appear to agree. This afternoon, Saban joined Paul Finebaum and defended his statement, clarifying that he wasn’t making an excuse for his team losing the game. He wasn’t thrilled with the whole situation.Glad Finebaum asked Saban to address whether this draft distraction thing was an excuse. Saban accepted blame for the loss. Clears that up.— David Ching (@ESPNChing) July 15, 2015Saban: “It wasn’t an excuse at all for losing to Ohio State. There’s no excuse.”— Saturday Down South (@SDS) July 15, 2015Saban: “It kind of surprises me that somebody in the media would take it that way when you make a suggestion that would make things better.”— Saturday Down South (@SDS) July 15, 2015Whether Saban meant to sound like he was making an excuse or not, that’s the way it came across to many. That being said, he does make a decent point – when players see how much money they can make if they stay healthy, they are naturally more incentivized to preserve themselves. Whether it’s ethically right to move the day back is up for debate.last_img read more

Hearing on Brexit opens at EUs highest court

first_imgBRUSSELS — The European Union’s highest court is hearing arguments on whether Britain could unilaterally revoke its decision to leave the EU ahead of its planned exit date of March 29.The European Court of Justice on Tuesday opened the session, which will assess the issue under an accelerated procedure due to the urgency of Brexit.Since Article 50 of the EU treaty of Lisbon dealing with the issue is scant on details — because it was expected that no member state would want to leave — a group of Scottish legislators want to know to what extend the U.K. can pull out of the withdrawal procedure on its own, amid increasing pressure from Brexit opponents for a second referendum on the decision to leave. The court decision could take several months. The Associated Presslast_img

Rahul aprabuddha unlimited Krishna

first_imgBengaluru: Former minister for external affairs S M Krishna Tuesday called Congress president Rahul Gandhi ‘aprabuddha unlimited’ (unintellectual unlimited) following a rap from the Supreme Court for wrongly attributing it to the Rafale case. “When somebody acquires a reputed position, especially in the case of the Congress president whose party has a history of 125 years, the sign of intellect should have been that the views are expressed cautiously after much deliberation. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’ It’s a sign of maturity. But today what we witnessed today is unintellectual unlimited,” Krishna said at a press conference here. The former Karnataka chief minister, who played a long innings in the Congress before joining the BJP, said the opposition “lacked truth and evidence” before making allegations. “Whatever the allegations are being made against the prime minister lacks truth, gravity and documentation. For example, we can see how the Congress president has incurred the wrath of Supreme Court due to his immature behaviour,” the BJP leader said. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K He was referring to the apex court’s order seeking explanation from Rahul Gandhi by April 22 for ‘incorrectly attributing’ to it in the Rafale deal case. The Supreme Court Monday made it clear that the remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in the media on the Rafale case verdict were “incorrectly attributed” to the apex court and directed the Congress chief to give his explanation by April 22. The top court gave a categorical clarification that in its Rafale judgement there was no occasion for it to make a mention of the alleged contemptuous observation that “Chowkidar Narendra Modi chor hain” as has been attributed to it by Gandhi. The former union minister said the ‘unintellectual’ has grown so big that the Congress president was caught in a difficult situation. He (Rahul Gandhi) may have to stand in front of the top court as a criminal on April 23, Krishna said. Noting that Gandhi’s statement symbolised “political discourse” touching a low ebb, Krishna said the Congress leader cannot escape by saying that his statement has been misquoted because they were video recorded. When asked how he saw the future of the country if Gandhi became the prime minister, Krishna said, “You should ask Mayawati or Akhilesh Yadav.” “Why has Congress become untouchable? In Uttar Pradesh the alliance of SP-BSP gave only two seats to Congress by taking pity on them. Do you need any other evidence than this to show how serious condition the Congress is in today?” he asked. On the NYAY scheme, Krishna sought to know how resources would be mobilised to materialise the scheme. The Congress, in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, has said Nyay assures up to Rs 72,000 a year or Rs 6,000 a month income to 20 per cent of India’s poorest families.last_img read more
