RSF_en News Follow the news on Cuba November 21, 2006 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Independent journalist aged 62 is freed after being held without trial for 16 months Organisation October 15, 2020 Find out more News to go further Reporters Without Borders today hailed yesterday’s release of journalist Oscar Mario González Pérez of the Grupo de Trabajo Decoro independent news agency, who had been held since July 2005. Twenty-three other independent journalists are still detained in Cuba.“The reasons for González’s release are not known, any more than the real reasons for his arrest and detention without trial for 16 months,” the press freedom organisation said. “His case is unfortunately typical of the absurd repressive methods used in Cuba. By freeing him, the authorities implicitly recognised that have no serious grounds for holding dissident journalists. We hope this is the prelude to the release of the 23 other detained journalists.”González, 62, was freed from “1580″ prison in San Miguel del Padrón (Havana province), where he had been since the start of this year after being held for months in a total of six different state security lockups. The prison authorities had told his family they had no knowledge of any charges against him. He had been placed in the prison’s FD section, FD standing for “falta de documentación” – no documentation.González, who helped found the Grupo de Trabajo Decoro agency in 1997, was arrested along with 33 other dissidents on 22 July 2005, on the eve of a demonstration that was to have been held outside the French embassy in Havana in protest against the “normalisation” of relations between the European Union and Cuba. They were all released except a lawyer, a human rights activist and González. These three initially appeared to be facing trial for threatening “Cuba’s territorial independence and economy” under Law 88, for which they could have received 20-year jail terms. But they were never formally charged. The state security police variously told González’s wife, Mirtha Wong, that the indictment “does not exist” or “cannot be found.”In July, the judicial authorities told his lawyer, Amelia Rodríguez, that he would be tried on a charge of “disturbing the peace,” which could have resulted in a one-year prison sentence. As a result of poor prison conditions, González began suffering from cervical osteoarthritis and high blood pressure while held. Neither of these ailments was properly treated.Three other Grupo de Trabajo Decoro journalists – Hector Maseda Gutiérrez, Omar Moíses Ruiz Hernández and José Ubaldo Izquierdo Hernández – have been imprisoned since March 2003. Telescoping dusting polesGreat for tall ceilings, skylights and anything really high up Submitted by Drew Freemantle for Maid PerfectMaid Perfect’s tools of the trade to keep your house dust free.“To dust or not to dust, that is the question”. Dusting can become a second priority because of our busy lives in today’s society. It can become challenging sometimes to just get the dishes done and pick up around the house. Yet we remain frustrated because our home is not as clean as we would really like it to be, if we only had the time. So dusting is thrown by the wayside along with a whole other list of things we would like to do.What is dust? There are two kinds of dust, indoor and outdoor . Outdoor dust contains just about anything that can be broken down into small bits and transported through the air such as pollen, allergens, sand, dirt and mold spores. Indoor dust contains lint from rugs, pet dander, hair and other household items. Dust gives modern pollutants something to stick to and the average house can accumulate up to 40lbs of dust per year. So dusting is good for your health and also makes your home look great. What are the tools of the trade? There are many different varieties of dusting devices you can use. Here are a few that Maid Perfect uses. Swiffers (short & long)Designed to attract dust, great for hard to reach areas Microfiber clothesDesigned to hold large amounts of dust, washable, great for general dusting. Facebook21Tweet0Pin0 Dusting ToolBenefits Multi-surface cleanersWork well for caked on dust Is there a correct method for dusting? At Maid Perfect we recommend to chose the proper tool for the job and dust left to right, top to bottom. By doing this you won’t miss anything and it stirs up less dust. These are the most commonly missed areas when dusting:BaseboardsExtension dusters clean hard to reach places.Ceiling fansLampshadesBlindsTops of cabinetsUnder nick knacksVentsWindow tracksHelpful tips: Use furniture oil sparingly because overuse can lead to a buildup and make it difficult to dust later.Dust about one to two times per month is usually all you need.Regular dusting of blinds can prevent more work later or even replacement.Lack of dusting can damage furniture.Maid Perfect specializes in Residential and Commercial cleaning for the Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater areas we are licensed, insured and all of our employees are background checked. Green Party election candidate Paula Flanagan. The Green Party has announced that Paula Flanagan from Gortahork will be standing as their candidate in Donegal for the upcoming General Election.Paula who is originally from Fermanagh, has lived with her partner Jim in Gortahork since 2001 and has family links in Bundoran and Ballyshannon. She has worked as a community and peace worker on both sides of the border for over 20 years, working particularly with women and young people.“There are two reasons I decided to stand in this General Election. The first is as a woman I do not feel equally represented in the Dáil, while the second is the need for a green voice representing Donegal in the next Dáil.” Highlighting the need for more female representation, Paula said there is little doubt that women have been disproportionately affected by this Government’s present policies and measures.“I have seen this first hand with the groups that I have worked with as a development worker. I also feel there is an opportunity to truly honour 1916 by having more female voices represented in Government as a testament to the vital role women had in creating our democratic history.”On how the Green Party could make a difference to the lives of people in Donegal Paula explained “At the heart of green politics is social justice but it is now painfully obvious that the floods devastating communities across the country are a sad reflection of the short sighted economic and political gains promoted by the present Government. With support from Green Party policies, Donegal is well placed to be an innovation hub for job creation within the energy, tourism and agriculture sectors, while ensuring that those who may not always be heard such as young people and women will be recognised.”By voting for Paula in 2016, the Green Party says Donegal constituents will have a strong female and green voice representing them in the Dáil that focuses on having a positive sustainable future for the county. Benoit Assou-Ekotto returned to Twitter to insist he had not previously posted a picture with fellow Tottenham outcast Emmanuel Adebayor in order to mock the north London club after their defeat against Liverpool.Andre Villas-Boas, who froze both players out at Spurs, was sacked in the wake of their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the Merseysiders.Assou-Ekotto, currently on loan at QPR, later tweeted a photograph of him and Adebayor smiling broadly, seemingly revelling in Tottenham’s problems. The left-back’s two-fingered gesture and a three-fingered one by Adebayor was also taken by many as a reference to the five goals Spurs conceded. After posting past pictures in which he posted with the same gesture, citing them as proof he meant no offence, Assou-Ekotto tweeted: “So as many people think as im enough stupid to b happy about a bad game of spurs…ur IQ is verrrry LOW! I left 10min b4 the end…(3/0.”
Reduced demand for power is keyUnion officials say that a variety of energy conservation steps were taken to reduce the amount of electricity needed to run the building by about 75% when compared to a conventional commercial building of the same size.Byron Benton, training director for Local 595 of the IBEW-NECA, says advanced controls for lighting and ventilation were instrumental in lowering energy needs. Ambient-light sensors in offices and classrooms turn on LED light fixtures as needed while shades on skylights and windows can be used to darken rooms. Automated windows placed near skylights let hot air out of the building while ground-level windows let cooler air in.Benton says that the heating and cooling system uses a refrigerant rather than forced air or water. “In liquid form, refrigerant takes heat out of the surrounding area,” he tells The Electrical Worker. “Then you can take that gas in the system and redistribute to a part of the building that might need heating. So we aren’t just independently heating a cold area; when possible, we are redistributing heat that is already in the building to where we want it.” California electrical workers have renovated a 46,000-sq.-ft. commercial building in San Leandro into a net-zero energy training center. According to The Electrical Worker online, it is one of the first net-zero projects in the country that transformed an existing commercial building. The Zero Net Energy Center, a project of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), will focus on energy conservation technologies as part of California’s effort to achieve its 2030 net-zero goal for commercial buildings. The training center, which officially opened on May 30, will use a combination of helical wind turbines and photovoltaic panels to reach energy self-sufficiency. At full capacity, the system is capable of producing 139 kW of electricity, which the union says is 10% more than the building would need with “every classroom full, every computer fired up and every office in use.”
Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now There’s a certain power in persistence. Persistence means you continue to take action until you get the result you are pursuing. It requires that one be determined, that one has the intestinal fortitude, that ability that is part grit and part pigheadedness. Especially as it pertains to prospecting, persistence is one of the keys to success. If you call your dream client once a quarter, you are not being persistent. You are also not really resting for 89 days before your next call. You are making a halfhearted attempt to reach her dream client, and that is why this strategy is ineffective. The challenge is to communicate at such a frequency that your prospective client becomes aware of who you are, what you believe, and how you might potentially create value for them. It is difficult to become known, and it’s even more difficult to be known as a value creator (someone with the ideas and experience that can help other people produce better results). It’s the persistence over time that keeps you alive in your dream client’s mind. You start to become known as someone who is attempting to contact your dream client. Then you become known as someone who works in a certain industry or business. Later, after we’ve communicated for a while, you become known as a person who has certain ideas and beliefs about the right decisions to make to produce better results (this only works if, in fact, you have the advice, the views, in the values that help people understand what it is that you believe). When something happens, and something always happens given a long enough timeline, your persistence has kept you top of mind. But not only has it has kept you top of mind, it has kept you at the top of the list of potential partners to consider when your dream client needs to make a change. If you make a halfhearted attempt to reach her dream client and go away, you are not going to be known as someone who may potentially help produce a better result-and replace your dream client’s current provider. You may think of prospecting as an activity that generates an appointment. You would be better to think of prospecting as a campaign that not only generates an appointment, but that also allows you to become known as a value creator, a potential partner, and someone who has persisted long enough to earn a shot.
